Paula Sigler is the daughter on one of Tipton County Commission on
Aging’s first Adult Day Respite Service (ADRS) members. Paula
submitted this story in honor of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul
(Junior) Lindley. Mr. Junior was a charter member of “The Club”.
TCCA is honored to receive this donation.
Paula’s story –
I have donated to United Way, as well as my husband through his
employer for a number of years. We never thought that our family
would have a need for services. However, I have experienced United
Way’s generosity first hand with TCCA, Tipton County Commission on
Aging, a United Way organization that cares for seniors, including a
program for seniors with dementia and Alzheimer’s.
My father, Junior Lindley began having memory loss and was
diagnosed with dementia at an early age which required him to take
early retirement. This was such a change because my father was such
a talented man, who could do, repair or build anything; could say he
was a “John Wayne” type of man. That was eight long years ago.
This disease has been fast and has affected our family’s life
drastically. My father is not able to take care of any of his needs
and requires 24 hour care. My mother is his full time caregiver,
along with help from me and my brothers. The required care of my
father has become difficult for my mom, and had begun to affect her
medically to the point that she was in need of rest, as well as the
need to have someone to talk to that understood being a caregiver.
That is when the Alzheimer’s Association referred our family to a
new program in Tipton County. We visited the TCCA and pursued
enrolment of my father in daycare designed specifically for his
need. We were so impressed with TCCA for many reasons, first and
foremost that the Dementia/Alzheimer’s daily care was managed by a
registered nurse and also that the TCCA is a member of the United
Way Organization.
We enrolled my father in “The Club” and have never regretted it for
a minute. My father attends 1-2 days per week, the staff at the
center is so caring, and they work with him trying to improve his
motor skills and his ability to eat on his own, among other things.
But not only has TCCA helped my father, it has greatly benefitted my
mother. She now has a few hours a week for “her”, she joined a
Senior Adult Leadership Class and also enjoys some much needed time
for rest and/or to run errands.
I could go on and on about my appreciation for United Way and TCCA.
Our family has been truly blessed with the care and help we have
received from this organization.
